Tragic Loss of Jax State Student Lilly McCain and Sister Libby McCain

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the passing of one of our own. On Thursday, August 21, first-year Jacksonville State University student Lilly McCain tragically lost her life in a fatal automobile accident. Adding to this unimaginable heartbreak, her younger sister, Libby McCain, a beloved student at Spring Garden High School, also perished in the crash.

Lilly had only just begun her journey with us here at Jax State, entering as a first-year student with sophomore status thanks to her dedication to academics and dual enrollment achievements. Though her time on campus was short, her presence was already felt—through her enthusiasm for learning, her kindness to those around her, and the bright future she carried with her. Her passing leaves a deep void within our university community.

Libby, too, was an extraordinary young woman—loved by her teachers, classmates, and community in Spring Garden. Known for her vibrant personality and joyful spirit, she had dreams and aspirations that were tragically cut short. The loss of these two bright, beautiful sisters is truly immeasurable, and we stand in solidarity with their family, friends, and loved ones during this time of profound grief.

A Celebration of Life for Lilly and Libby will be held Tuesday, August 26, at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Centre, Alabama, with visitation on Monday, August 25, from 4–7 p.m. at the church. The family has requested that those attending wear bright, cheerful colors to honor the radiant lives and joyful spirits of Lilly and Libby.

As a campus community, we understand that grief touches everyone differently. We want to remind students, faculty, and staff that counseling and support resources are available. Counseling Services can be reached at 256-782-5475 during business hours, and for after-hours support, University Police at 256-782-5050 can connect you to an on-call counselor. We urge anyone in need of support to reach out—no one has to navigate this loss alone.

In this time of sorrow, let us come together as a family—honoring Lilly and Libby’s lives, supporting one another in our grief, and keeping the McCain family in our hearts and prayers. Though words cannot ease the pain of this tragedy, may our collective strength and compassion carry us forward.
