LAS VEGAS, NV (August 23, 2021) – Today, we pause to remember and honor the life and service of Sergeant Douglas King, a devoted law enforcement officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), who passed away on August 23, 2021, from complications related to COVID-19.
Sgt. King began his career with LVMPD on August 12, 2004, dedicating 17 years of his life to serving and protecting the Las Vegas community. Throughout his career, he earned the respect of his peers and the gratitude of those whose lives he touched.
He was widely recognized for his extraordinary courage and unwavering commitment to duty. One of the defining moments of his career was his heroic response to the Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting on October 1, 2017, where he was among the first officers on the scene of one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. His actions that night reflected the very essence of what it means to be a protector in the face of unimaginable danger.
Sgt. King’s valor was again demonstrated during a domestic violence incident, where his decisive actions saved lives. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the department’s highest recognition for acts of heroism.
Beyond his badge, Sgt. King was remembered as a man of kindness, integrity, and compassion. His colleagues described him as a natural leader who inspired others through his quiet strength and his unwavering belief in doing what was right.
To his family, Sgt. King was a loving husband and father, devoted to his wife Cinnamon and their daughters Scarlett, Tommi, and Hannah. His passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but his legacy will live on through the lives he impacted both in and out of uniform.
“Sergeant King embodied what it means to serve with honor,” said an LVMPD spokesperson. “His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his memory will continue to guide and inspire our department.”
As we reflect on Sgt. King’s life and service, we remember that the strength of a community is built upon the dedication of those willing to stand in harm’s way to protect others. Today, and always, we honor his sacrifice, his bravery, and the enduring legacy of a true hero.
Rest in Peace, Sergeant Douglas King. End of Watch: August 23, 2021.
