ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that took place Friday night in Southeast Albuquerque, leaving one man dead and an entire community shaken.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), officers were dispatched around 8:25 p.m. to reports of gunfire at the East Gardens Mobile Home Park, located near Zuni Road SE and Wyoming Boulevard. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel quickly rendered aid, and the victim was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, authorities confirmed the man later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His identity has not yet been released, pending notification of his family.
Police say the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting, and as of late Friday night, no arrests have been made. Investigators from APD’s Homicide Unit responded to process the scene, interview potential witnesses, and search for any surveillance footage from the area. Detectives have not disclosed a motive, and it remains unclear whether the victim and the suspect knew each other.
Residents of the East Gardens community described the scene as chaotic, with flashing police lights and tape blocking the mobile home park as officers worked late into the night. Some neighbors expressed fear over the rising gun violence in Albuquerque, noting that shootings in the Southeast area have become an all-too-common occurrence.
“This used to be a quiet place,” one neighbor said. “Now, every few weeks, there’s sirens or shootings. It’s heartbreaking.”
Friday’s killing adds to the city’s ongoing struggle with violent crime, particularly in Southeast Albuquerque, where law enforcement has increased patrols in recent months in an effort to reduce shootings and gang-related violence.
The homicide investigation is active and ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting, the suspect’s whereabouts, or any suspicious activity in the area to contact APD’s Homicide Unit. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers (505-843-STOP), with potential rewards for information leading to an arrest.
Authorities say more details, including the victim’s name and additional circumstances surrounding the case, will be released as the investigation progresses.
