MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A suspect in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Antonio Sykes, Jr. in Cordova has been captured after a multi-state manhunt that ended in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday morning.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 18-year-old Trenton Dillon Harris was arrested on August 28 after weeks of investigation. Harris had been wanted on a first-degree murder charge following the killing of Sykes earlier this month.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a shooting outside a convenience store near Berryhill Road and Chimneyrock Boulevard. When they arrived, they discovered Sykes inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two days later, investigators secured a murder arrest warrant for Harris. The Two Rivers Fugitive Task Force, working alongside the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, developed intelligence indicating that Harris had fled Memphis and was hiding in the Atlanta area.
On Thursday morning, agents located Harris at a residence in Atlanta. Authorities said he was taken into custody without incident, ending a search that stretched across state lines.
Harris is now being held in Georgia, awaiting extradition back to Shelby County to face formal charges.
The arrest brings some relief to Sykes’ grieving family and the Cordova community, though questions remain about the motive behind the deadly shooting.
Law enforcement officials praised the coordinated efforts between agencies, emphasizing that Harris’s arrest demonstrates their commitment to pursuing violent offenders across jurisdictions.
