SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A tragic wrong-way crash in northeast San Antonio claimed the life of a man early Friday morning after police say a suspected drunk driver slammed head-on into his vehicle.
According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), officers were dispatched around 3 a.m. to the 16300 block of Wurzbach Parkway following reports of a major collision. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two heavily damaged vehicles — a blue Chevrolet Silverado and a gray 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis — that had collided head-on in the westbound lanes.
Investigators determined that the driver of the Silverado had been traveling the wrong way, heading eastbound in the westbound lane, when he struck the Grand Marquis directly. The impact was severe and left the driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis critically injured. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Silverado was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of his injuries. According to police, medical staff confirmed he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. After receiving care, he was placed under arrest and is now facing charges connected to the deadly collision.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim pending notification of family. Police also have not disclosed the identity of the suspected drunk driver, but they confirmed that charges will be pursued.
The crash forced the temporary closure of lanes along the stretch of Wurzbach Parkway as officers conducted their investigation and cleanup crews worked to clear the wreckage.
A Familiar Danger on San Antonio Roads

San Antonio law enforcement has repeatedly warned about the dangers of driving under the influence, which remains a significant factor in fatal accidents across the city.
Community members are already expressing frustration and heartbreak over yet another preventable tragedy. Advocates for road safety stress that lives continue to be lost because of reckless choices made by impaired drivers.
SAPD is urging drivers to plan ahead, arrange for designated drivers, or use rideshare services when drinking, stressing that one irresponsible decision can lead to devastating and permanent consequences.
As the investigation continues, the victim’s family is now left mourning the sudden loss of a loved one, while the community is once again reminded of the deadly cost of impaired driving.
