JusticeForChelloCoalition: Community Demands Accountability in the Death of Marchello Woodard

ERIE, Pa. — The death of Marchello “Chello” Woodard on July 2, 2025, has ignited protests, frustration, and calls for accountability in Erie and beyond. According to community advocates, Woodard was fatally shot by his probation officer during a confrontation, sparking outrage after weeks passed with no arrests, no criminal charges filed, and no public resolution.

Friends, family members, and activists have since mobilized under the banner #JusticeForChelloCoalition, demanding transparency in the investigation and pressing officials for answers.

The case took a dramatic turn when a jury reportedly found probation officer Kevin Seelinger guilty of the murder of Marchello Woodard, a verdict that many community members say validates their long-standing calls for justice. However, despite this reported jury outcome, Erie County officials have yet to announce formal charges.

Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz acknowledged that her office has received “investigative materials” from local police, but clarified that no final determination has been made as the investigation continues. Hirz’s statement has done little to quell growing frustration among community members, who argue that the system is dragging its feet in a case where accountability should be swift and clear.

For many in Erie, the lack of immediate arrests has fueled distrust in the justice system. “If it were anyone else, they’d already be behind bars,” one coalition member said during a recent rally. Advocates have raised concerns about a perceived double standard when law enforcement officers or probation officials are involved in fatal shootings.

The #JusticeForChello movement has spread across social media, amplifying calls for action and drawing attention to Woodard’s story. Supporters describe him as a beloved member of the community whose life was cut short in a way that demands scrutiny and accountability.

Organizers of the coalition say their fight is not only for Marchello Woodard but also for broader reform. They are pushing for:

  • Full transparency in investigations involving law enforcement or probation officers.
  • Independent review boards to oversee cases of police-involved or officer-involved shootings.
  • Legislative reforms to ensure that families are not left in limbo while awaiting prosecutorial decisions.

Community vigils, marches, and town hall meetings have been held in Erie since the shooting, with demonstrators carrying signs reading “Justice for Chello” and chanting demands for immediate accountability.

As the investigation continues, Woodard’s name has become a rallying cry for those seeking systemic change. The coalition has vowed to keep organizing until justice is served, not only for Marchello but for every family that feels left behind by the criminal justice system.

“Chello’s life mattered,” one organizer said at a recent gathering. “And we will not stop until his family gets the justice they deserve.”
