WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WKRC) – Residents of West Chester were greeted by a startling sight early Friday morning as a massive geyser erupted in front of a home on Willowood Drive just before 6 a.m. The dramatic scene was caused by a water main break at the intersection of Willowood Drive and Larchwood.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud noise shortly before dawn, followed by a sudden gush of water shooting several feet into the air. The force of the eruption flooded portions of the street and surrounding yards, creating immediate hazards for vehicles and pedestrians in the area.
Local authorities and utility crews quickly responded to the scene to assess the damage and shut off the water supply to prevent further flooding. Residents in the immediate vicinity were advised to avoid the area while repairs were underway and to use caution due to possible slippery conditions and water pressure hazards.
Officials from the Butler County Water Department stated that water main breaks of this nature, while uncommon, can occur due to aging infrastructure or sudden shifts in water pressure. “Our crews are working diligently to repair the break and restore normal water service as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson said. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of residents affected by this incident.”
The unexpected eruption caused significant inconvenience for local residents, some of whom experienced temporary water outages or flooding in their yards and driveways. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, but emphasized the importance of remaining cautious around the scene.
Traffic in the area was temporarily redirected while crews worked to contain the flooding and repair the damaged main. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news updates and follow any directives from the West Chester Police Department and public works officials.
“This was a very unusual and dramatic start to the day for our community,” a neighbor commented. “It’s not every morning you see a geyser in your front yard!”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the water main break and are reviewing the condition of surrounding infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Residents with questions or concerns regarding water service or potential property damage are urged to contact the Butler County Water Department for guidance.
