Everyone at St Albans City FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of long-serving supporter and devoted club servant, John Lister.
John’s association with the Saints spanned decades, and his impact on the club and local football community was immeasurable. He first joined the club’s management committee in the late 1990s, where he played a vital role in the day-to-day running of operations. His commitment to St Albans City was unwavering, and his contributions left a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.
In the mid-2010s, John personally financed the maintenance of the Clarence Park floodlights, ensuring that the stadium remained fit for purpose and that matches could continue to be enjoyed by supporters under the lights. His generosity and dedication extended far beyond financial contributions, however. Alongside his close friend Gordon Kennisford, John hosted countless local cup finals at Clarence Park, giving grassroots clubs and players the opportunity to experience memorable occasions on a larger stage.
For over a decade, John could be found staying behind long after every home match—often in the company of Gordon—working tirelessly to clean the stadium and prepare it for the next fixture. His efforts, carried out quietly and without fanfare, embodied the true spirit of volunteerism and community that underpins football at all levels.
John’s love for the game extended well beyond Clarence Park. Clubs across St Albans and the wider local football community benefitted from his tireless work, support, and encouragement. He was respected by all who knew him, not only for his dedication but also for his warmth, humility, and passion for the sport.
The passing of John Lister is a tremendous loss for St Albans City FC, Clarence Park, and the football community as a whole. He will be fondly remembered by supporters, players, staff, and countless others who were fortunate enough to share in his company and benefit from his commitment.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with John’s family and friends during this difficult time. His contribution to football in St Albans will live on as part of the proud history of our club.
Rest in peace, John. Thank you for everything you gave to St Albans City FC and to the game we all love.
