PICO RIVERA, Calif. — Authorities have identified and arrested 20-year-old Andres Adan Chavez in connection with the tragic shooting of 13-year-old Saith Israel Toledo Mendez, who was fatally shot while waiting for his mother at the gas station where she worked.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 8800 block of Whittier Boulevard, between Paramount and Rosemead boulevards. Saith had been waiting in his mother’s car for her to finish her shift at the service station but briefly went inside to speak with her before returning outside.
Horrific Attack Caught on Witness Accounts
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna described the shooting during a Thursday morning press conference, urging the public for assistance in locating the perpetrator. Authorities stated that Chavez had been seated in the rear passenger seat of a tan four-door sedan that approached the gas station and parked near the pumps.
According to Sheriff Luna, the driver of the vehicle exited the car and spoke with Clara, Saith’s mother, at the service window. Meanwhile, Chavez loitered near the station. As the young teenager walked past him, Chavez allegedly drew a firearm without provocation, advanced toward Saith, and shot him at close range. The mother witnessed the attack, which reportedly struck her son in the back.
After Saith fell, Chavez allegedly stood over him and fired multiple rounds before fleeing on foot into a nearby residential area. The driver of the tan sedan and a female passenger remained at the scene, were questioned by authorities, and subsequently released pending further investigation.
Arrest and Investigation
Chavez has been arrested following an intensive investigation by local law enforcement. Details regarding charges and court proceedings are forthcoming. Sheriff Luna emphasized the severity of the act, calling it “an extremely cowardly act” and vowing justice for the young victim and his family.
During the press conference, Luna acknowledged the difficulty of discussing the crime in front of Saith’s family but stated that he had previously consulted with Clara, who chose not to speak publicly.
“We are here for two reasons,” Luna said. “First, to seek justice for Saith and his family. Second, to apprehend this violent individual who committed this extremely cowardly act and remove him from our streets.”
Community in Mourning
The fatal shooting has sent shockwaves through the Pico Rivera community. Residents, local leaders, and family members expressed grief and outrage over the senseless loss of a young life. Community members have also called for increased measures to prevent gun violence and ensure the safety of children in public spaces.
