IN MEMORY OF TOM SORRELL: A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO PHFD AND HIS COMMUNITY

We at PHFD are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of a longtime member, colleague, and friend, Tom Sorrell. Tom’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of our department and our community, and his absence will be felt profoundly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Legacy of Dedication

Tom joined the Pleasant Hill Fire Department (PHFD) in 1961, beginning what would become a remarkable journey of more than six decades of service. His commitment to the department was unwavering. Over the years, he served in numerous roles, most notably as Lieutenant, where he led by example, inspiring those around him with his steady hand, calm demeanor, and passion for the work.

In addition to his duties with PHFD, Tom extended his leadership to the broader community, serving as a City Councilman. His dedication to public service was evident in everything he did — always striving to make Pleasant Hill a safer, stronger, and more connected place to live.

A Lifetime Member and Unwavering Supporter

Though Tom eventually retired from active duty, he never truly left the department. He was honored with Life Time Membership, a recognition of his extraordinary contributions and years of sacrifice. Even in retirement, Tom continued to be a constant presence at monthly meetings, community events, and departmental functions.

Whether lending a hand with cleanup efforts, assisting with parade preparations, or simply sharing stories from his years of service, Tom’s support never waned. He embodied what it means to be a firefighter — not just in times of emergency, but as a pillar of community spirit, teamwork, and fellowship.

A Friend, a Mentor, a Brother

To many within PHFD, Tom was more than a colleague — he was a mentor and a friend. His wisdom guided younger members, his humor lightened long shifts, and his loyalty created bonds that will endure long after his passing.

“Tom represented everything good about this department,” said one fellow firefighter. “He taught us what service truly means — not just showing up for the big calls, but being there day in and day out for the community and for each other.”

Our Condolences

On behalf of everyone at PHFD, past and present, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Tom’s family. We hope they find comfort in knowing the profound impact he made and the enduring respect he earned from all of us who served alongside him.

Tom Sorrell’s legacy will live on — in the department he helped build, in the community he loved, and in the lives of all those he inspired.

Rest in peace, Tom. We’ll carry the torch from here.
