One Dead, Driver Arrested Following Early-Morning Crash in New Philadelphia

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — Authorities have identified 21-year-old Terron Henderson as the victim of a deadly single-vehicle crash that occurred early Saturday morning, leaving him dead and another man in custody.

According to the New Philadelphia Police Department, officers were dispatched around 2:06 a.m. on August 23 to the intersection of South Broadway and Hilan Avenue SW following reports of a crash with injuries.

The Crash

When officers arrived, they discovered a Dodge Charger at the scene and Henderson lying outside the vehicle. Witnesses told investigators that just moments before the crash, he was seen hanging out of the passenger-side window and pounding on the roof of the car in an excited manner.

Despite immediate response efforts, Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Driver

The driver of the Dodge Charger was identified as 37-year-old Janesh Levy Cabrera-Vargas. Police said Cabrera-Vargas fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash but was apprehended by officers a short distance away.

Authorities confirmed that Cabrera-Vargas holds a Virginia driver’s license but is currently living and working in New Philadelphia. He was taken into custody and is facing charges related to the fatal crash.

Possible Contributing Factors

Investigators believe that speed and impairment played significant roles in the crash. Toxicology reports and lab results are pending, and police say those findings will help determine the final scope of charges Cabrera-Vargas may face.

“The investigation remains active, but early indications point to reckless driving behavior compounded by possible impairment,” officials noted in a release.

The deadly incident prompted a large-scale response, with multiple agencies assisting at the scene. Authorities extended thanks to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, the New Philadelphia Fire Department, and the New Philadelphia Street Department for their assistance in managing the crash site and the investigation.
