CHICAGO — A 29-year-old woman has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a 5-year-old boy who was fatally shot Sunday afternoon on Chicago’s South Side, according to police.
The suspect, identified as Danya Bell, has been charged with one felony count of child endangerment resulting in death. Police confirmed that Bell’s arrest took place at 3:54 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, in the 5100 block of South Wentworth Avenue, roughly three hours after the tragic shooting occurred.
Authorities say the boy was shot inside a residence in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue earlier that day. Emergency responders rushed the child to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Despite doctors’ efforts, he later died from his injuries.
Chicago police have not released the boy’s name at this time, pending notification of his family.
The arrest of Bell stems directly from the shooting incident, though police have not disclosed specific details about her involvement or whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. The investigation remains active and ongoing, and detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
A booking photo released by Chicago Police Department shows Bell in custody following the charges. She is expected to appear in court for a bond hearing, where prosecutors will present further details surrounding the case.
The fatal shooting has devastated residents of the South Side community, where neighbors described the incident as both shocking and heartbreaking. Many expressed grief that another young life was lost to gun violence, while others voiced frustration over what they called a persistent cycle of tragedy.
City leaders and community advocates have also called for justice for the young boy, urging greater accountability in cases where children’s lives are placed in jeopardy.
Authorities have emphasized that the case remains under investigation, and additional charges could be filed as evidence is reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
For now, police say their priority is ensuring a thorough investigation while supporting the grieving family of the 5-year-old victim.
