Detroit Man Amir Khalid Charged in High-Speed Crash That Killed 8-Year-Old and 16-Year-Old Injured Another Teen

DETROIT, MIAmir Khalid, a Detroit man, has been formally charged following a devastating crash that claimed the lives of 8-year-old  and 16-year-old and left another 16-year-old girl seriously injured over the weekend. Authorities announced the charges Monday, describing Khalid’s actions as “extreme reckless driving” that led to an unimaginable tragedy for the victims’ family.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the crash occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 23, around 12:30 a.m. Investigators allege that Khalid was driving northbound on Gratiot Avenue at speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour when he collided with another vehicle attempting to turn east onto August Street.

Inside the victim’s vehicle were a woman and three children. The collision’s impact was catastrophic, killing two of the children at the scene. The surviving 16-year-old girl remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The woman’s condition has not yet been publicly disclosed.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Khalid with:

  • Two counts of Reckless Driving Causing Death
  • One count of Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment

“These charges reflect the tragic consequences of reckless behavior on our roadways,” said a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office. “Two young lives were taken in an instant, and an entire family is left shattered.”

Community Reaction and Outrage

News of the fatal crash has sparked grief and outrage throughout Detroit, particularly along the Gratiot Avenue corridor, where residents have long complained about dangerous driving. Community leaders are calling for increased traffic enforcement and measures to curb speeding before more lives are lost.

“This is heartbreaking,” said one nearby resident. “Two children are gone because someone chose to drive like that. It’s senseless and it has to stop.”

Ongoing Investigation

Khalid remains in custody as investigators continue reviewing surveillance footage, vehicle data, and witness statements. Officials have not yet released the children’s full identities, pending notification of family, but friends and loved ones are already planning a candlelight vigil to honor their memory.

Khalid is expected to be arraigned later this week. If convicted, he faces significant prison time.

This tragedy serves as a devastating reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and has reignited calls for accountability and change on Detroit’s roads.
