Just after 11:00 PM on August 25, deputies from the East Division Patrol responded to a shooting call on the 9500 block of Helio Drive in East Sacramento County. A caller reported that a male, later identified as 42-year-old Jeremy Watkins, had fired multiple rounds from a gun and was walking through the residential neighborhood shirtless, armed with both a rifle and a handgun. Authorities also learned that Watkins had pointed a firearm at a passing vehicle, heightening the danger to residents and bystanders in the area.
Rapid Response and Containment
Deputies quickly set up a containment perimeter around the neighborhood, ensuring the safety of residents while coordinating additional resources. Assistance arrived from the California Highway Patrol AIR21 unit, Elk Grove Police K9 teams, and Sheriff’s drone units, providing aerial support and situational awareness to monitor Watkins’ movements.
SWAT Intervention and Arrest
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Division (SWAT) was called in to handle the dangerous situation. Utilizing careful tactical measures, SWAT Deputies successfully moved in and took Jeremy Watkins into custody without further incident. The rifle and handgun he was carrying were recovered, and a subsequent search of his property revealed additional firearms, all of which were booked for safekeeping by authorities.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Watkins was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail facing multiple felony charges related to reckless discharge of a firearm, brandishing a weapon, and endangering public safety. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on August 28.
