According to the Champaign Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of W. Springfield Avenue at 3:04 a.m. on August 24, 2025, after receiving multiple reports of gunfire and injuries. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the male victim unconscious and unresponsive, having sustained multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Responding officers immediately began lifesaving measures and transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, the man’s injuries proved fatal.

Initial investigations suggest the victim was in a parking lot when two individuals approached him and fired multiple shots. The assailants then fled the scene in a vehicle, which officers later located in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard. The investigation quickly led to the apprehension of Moore and Newbill, who were taken into custody for their alleged roles in the shooting. Two firearms were recovered during the investigation, and both men now face charges of First-Degree Murder.

Even with arrests made, police say the investigation remains active. Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may assist in building the case. Residents and business owners with exterior surveillance systems in the area are encouraged to contact the Champaign Police Department if they have information.

The department expressed gratitude for the support of two multijurisdictional units, the Metro SWAT Team and the Street Crimes Task Force, who assisted in the investigation.
