NEW MARKET TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Authorities are investigating a deadly collision in Highland County that claimed at least one life on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), the crash happened at the intersection of Ohio State Route 138 and Mad River Road in New Market Township. Troopers say two vehicles collided at the intersection, leaving behind heavy damage and tragic consequences.
While OSHP confirmed the crash was fatal, officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased or confirmed the total number of victims. Emergency responders from multiple agencies were called to the scene, where they worked to provide aid to those involved and secure the roadway.
The intersection of Ohio-138 and Mad River Road was closed for several hours as troopers reconstructed the scene and collected evidence. Authorities are still determining the sequence of events that led to the crash, including whether speed, impairment, or road conditions played a role.
Local residents described the area as a dangerous intersection that has seen numerous crashes over the years. Many say they are urging transportation officials to consider additional safety measures, such as stoplights or better signage, to prevent further tragedies.
The Highland County coroner’s office is assisting with the investigation, and notifications to next of kin are pending. Troopers say additional details, including the identities of those involved, will be released once families have been notified.
