The Episcopal Camps & Conference Centers community is mourning the sudden loss of Buddy Payne, a cherished leader whose dedication and love for youth ministry touched countless lives.
Born and raised in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, Buddy devoted his life to nurturing young people through the ministry of camps. For more than 15 years, he served in a variety of roles at Trinity Center and Camp Trinity in the Diocese of East Carolina, where his energy, creativity, and unwavering care left an indelible mark on campers and colleagues alike.
Most recently, Buddy joined the leadership team at DaySpring Camp & Conference Center in the Diocese of Southwest Florida as Director of Camp and Outdoors. In this role, he brought his deep love of the outdoors, boundless joy, and inventive spirit to every camper and staff member he encountered. Known for his humor, clever puns, and enthusiasm for adventure, Buddy had a remarkable ability to make every young person feel seen, valued, and free to grow.
An avid fisherman, kayaker, and lifelong youth minister, Buddy was described by friends and colleagues as a “jack-of-all-trades,” equally at home leading outdoor adventures or mentoring staff. His true gift, however, lay in creating spaces of belonging and joy, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working with him.
The Episcopal Camps & Conference Centers community extends its deepest sympathies to Buddy’s parents, Janet and Stukie Payne, as well as to the staff, campers, and friends at Trinity Center, DaySpring, and all the communities he served. His life and ministry will continue to resonate through the generations of young people whose lives were shaped by his care, guidance, and spirit.
Buddy Payne’s legacy is one of faith, joy, mentorship, and love for creation, and he will be remembered not only for his leadership but also for the warmth and inspiration he brought to every corner of the camp community.
