58-Year-Old Derrick Lamont Comer Identified as Victim in Hopewell Shooting

HOPEWELL, Va. — Authorities have identified the man killed in an early morning shooting in Hopewell on Thursday as 58-year-old Derrick Lamont Comer, a longtime resident of the city.

According to the Hopewell Police Department, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 800 block of Chestnut Street just before 6 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered Comer suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, Comer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released any information about a potential suspect or motive behind the shooting. Officials confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Unit has launched an active investigation into the case. Detectives are canvassing the area, reviewing possible surveillance footage, and speaking with residents in hopes of gathering more information.

The incident has left neighbors in shock. Chestnut Street, a normally quiet area in the early morning hours, was disrupted by the heavy police presence as investigators processed the scene.
