FAR NORTH, S.A. – August 24, 2025 – A young man has tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle crash on Kempe Road in South Australia’s far north on Sunday morning, marking yet another road fatality in the state this year.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene just before 9 a.m., about 21 kilometers southwest of Oodnadatta, after reports of a Toyota 4WD that had rolled over. Upon arrival, first responders found the driver, an 18-year-old man from New South Wales, who sadly died at the scene from his injuries.

The vehicle’s passenger, a 20-year-old man from Coober Pedy, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Due to the severity of the crash, Major Crash officers were flown in from Adelaide to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the rollover. At this stage, the cause of the accident has not been confirmed, and police are continuing to gather evidence.

As a result of the crash, a minor detour was put in place on Kempe Road between Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta for much of the day. Normal traffic conditions were restored just before 7 p.m.

Authorities confirmed that this tragic accident represents the 55th life lost on South Australian roads in 2025, underscoring ongoing concerns about road safety across the state. Police continue to urge all motorists, especially those driving long distances through remote regions, to exercise caution, stay alert, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

The name of the 18-year-old victim has not yet been released as family members are notified. Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing, with Major Crash officers expected to provide further updates once the circumstances leading to the rollover are clearer.
